Centerpieces

September 24, 2009

In a little over 7 weeks we will be celebrating World Diabetes Day. Cherise from Diabetic Iz Me, Chris from Livin with Diabetes and I are participating in the 2ndAnnual World Diabetes Day being hosted by Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center. Chris is designing shirts that I cannot wait to see, while Cherise and I are helping out wherever we are needed.

Possible Center Piece for WDD 2009Right now our task is to find centerpieces for 12 tables. Can you hear the wheels in my head turning? Yesterday Thomas was cleaning up the kitchen and went to throw away a coffee can. Immediately I went into Craft Annie mode. Hmmm if I take a straw (one of the big red kinds you get from Q.T.) and cut a slit on one end to hold the paper, then tape the paper to the straw to hold it in place, then hot glue the straw to the inside handle, then get some decorative paper or cloth to cover the top, and well you can see how this could go on.

During all of this I sent out a tweet and Cherise called me laughing. She was looking for something taller so we scrapped the idea. She has an incense holder that might work if it was about 5 in taller. Her thoughts are to search the local craft stores for something that looked like this, that is blue or can be painted and of course the cheaper the better. The hunt is on.

The other thing that we are diligently working on is a list of resources. The list will consist of blogs, social networks, and local resources. We are looking for all kinds of diabetes blogs (t1, t1.5, t2, t3-parents of diabetics, spouses and significant others of diabetics). If you have a blog that you want included leave it in the comments or email me at andrea [at] stickysweetdiabetics [dot] org. We would love to have you!

Simple idea: straw wreaths from the craft shop, spray-painted blue, holding blue WDD pillar candles. Or any WDD-blue pillar candles.

Taller? Use large tapers instead of pillar candles. Find some basic candelabras at the craft shop or home-dec store and spray paint the appropriate shade of blue, or decorate with blue silk flowers. Set a small wreath and candle setup on top an upended coffee can; let blue *something* trail down the outsides of it. (Or maybe pledge cards or donation cards.)
